The "Great Train Robbery," is the first narrative film. Directed in 1903 by Edwin S. Porter, who had worked as a cameraman for Thomas Edison. The 11-minute long film was shot in and near Edison's New Jersey studio. The storyline was inspired by several genuine robberies of mail trains in the American West.
